Here are just some of the awards from yesterday's announcement of the American Library Association's Youth Media Awards.  Those with asterisks are those we already own, all the others are on order!

John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature:

“Last Stop on Market Street,” written by Matt de la Peña, illustrated by Christian Robinson.  

Newbery Honors:

“The War that Saved My Life,” written by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley 

*“Roller Girl,” written and illustrated by Victoria Jamieson 

“Echo,” written by Pam Muñoz Ryan 

Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished American picture book for children:

Ironically, the winner of the Newbery (chapter - upper grades) also won a Caldecott honor award (best picture book)

MLK Day Celebration 2016: Please Share Your Art & Writing!

The Winchester Multicultural Network (WMCN)'s annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday will be from in Metcalf Hall at the Unitarian Church. We are pleased that the Family Action Network (FAN) is again co-sponsoring the event, and we expect a large crowd of families and youngsters.

As in the past, we plan to display a wide range of student artwork and writing commemorating the holiday, and we hope you and your students will enjoy contributing to this effort!  

Lincoln Students - If there is anything you would like to have displayed at the event, please leave it in the school office by the end of the school day on and one of our volunteers will pick it up.  PLEASE be sure to label each item with your name, grade, and the name of the school so we can be sure to get it back to you.

 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.)^[1] is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around King's birthday, January 15. The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later.
